Hawaii has been booked
“When are you going to Hawaii?” “So, are you doing Hawaii?” “Wait, they have ice rinks in Hawaii?”
Not only does ice hockey exist in Hawaii, I’m going to experience it first-hand! I booked my flight this morning, and I’m going to be there November 12-16.
Anybody want to start a betting pool on how much extra United charges me for my hockey bag and sticks?
EDIT: Looks like I’ll have to make this trip “powered by Subaru” in only 49 of the 50 states, since you can’t rent Subarus in Hawaii. 🙁
I have no idea what kind of arrangements you might have with the rink/someone in Hawaii but it would probably be easier and cheaper to borrow a stick while you’re there.
@Matt B That could work. I’m probably more concerned about the rest of the gear; United’s page on sporting goods seems to imply a limit of 62 linear inches, and my gear bag is close to 85 linear inches.
$100 each way, ouch. http://www.united.com/page/article/1,,53403,00.html
Might be cheaper to ship the gear fedex or UPS!!!
@Isaac Sachs I’m hoping I can talk my way out of that, seeing as how other carries like Delta, US Airways, and (not surprisingly) Air Canada all have higher size exemptions for hockey equipment.
There might be another solution. I got a tip from Chris over on Twitter that the rink has a set of goalie gear that I could probably borrow. Assuming it’s close to the right size, I could probably get away with a small subset of my equipment.
@Todd Just for fun, I went over to the FedEx site and asked what it would cost to ship the gear. If I could tolerate 2-day shipping instead of overnight, the cost would be about $430 each way. Yikes!
Yikes!!! Maybe the could give you a freebie for a mention in the blog! :}
Have fun! Let me know when your new plan is for North Carolina!
Exciting!
If it’s any consolation, I’ve had someone order paper goods to Hawaii and it was $120 for UPS ground shipping which takes about a week.
I’m sure you could at least test drive a Subaru while in Hawaii. http://subaruhawaii.com/Distributor/Subaru/
